Carrefour, Europe's largest retailer, has opted for BARO's lighting expertise to illuminate its new "City" branch format. With this new branch concept Carrefour City focuses on quick and convenient shopping in inner city areas. The opening hours from 8 a.m. to midnight and the product assortment with basic groceries and convenience products are tailored to the needs of urban life. With these conveniently-sized stores and an attractive ambience Carrefour wants to offer customers an inviting and relaxing shopping atmosphere. At the same time the retailer aims to reduce operating and energy costs. In view of these aspects existing Carrefour stores are currently being modified to meet the demands of the new "City" concept.

In accordance with the requirements the lighting concept was created using flexible and attractive Intara-Caronda recessed luminaires. These luminaires with electronic control gear and BBS lamps (BARO Bright Star) offer a higher luminous flux, improved colour rendering and a longer life. Intara-Caretta and Intara-Econdo Batwing recessed luminaires with large luminaire spacings and the suspended luminaire Pendiro-Circinus were also fitted to match the respective product assortments and interior design. The project was planned and accomplished by the BARO subsidiary "BARO France sarl".

Carrefour "City" is a success story: the target turnover increase of 12% has been greatly exceeded with an actual growth rate of more than 28%. Customers are satisfied and the shopping atmosphere created is very pleasant. All products are perfectly illuminated and the power consumption is still lower than before.
